Established in the 1991-92 season, the league was previously known as the Molson Sportsman Hockey League until the summer of 2022 when it was rebranded as SCORE-HL.
At over 30 years, it is most likely the longest-running men’s recreational hockey league in Barrie and surrounding areas.
The original founders played in a highly competitive men’s hockey league in the area. Over the years, all of the top players migrated to 2 teams, leaving the other teams unable to compete evenly. The league soon became dirty, rough and just not fun anymore for the typical recreational type player.
Over a beer and wings, they decided to start a new league that promoted fun and community fellowship, and with that, the Molson Sportsmen Hockey League was formed.
Fast forward 30 years, and the new owners of the league – Mark Froats and Rob Elrick – continue the long-standing tradition of fun and fellowship at the rink.
The league is open to anyone who is 30 years or older as of January 1st of the current hockey season. Everyone is welcome – there are no restrictions on skill level. All players are rated and then the Team Captains draft from the registered base of players to ensure well-balanced teams are created each season.
