Welcome to the Simcoe County Over-30 Recreational Hockey League – or SCORE-HL

Established in the 1991-92 season, the league was previously known as the Molson Sportsman Hockey League until the summer of 2022 when it was rebranded as SCORE-HL.

At over 30 years, it is most likely the longest-running men’s recreational hockey league in Barrie and surrounding areas.

The original founders played in a highly competitive men’s hockey league in the area. Over the years, all of the top players migrated to 2 teams, leaving the other teams unable to compete evenly. The league soon became dirty, rough and just not fun anymore for the typical recreational type player.

Over a beer and wings, they decided to start a new league that promoted fun and community fellowship, and with that, the Molson Sportsmen Hockey League was formed.

Fast forward 30 years, and the new owners of the league – Mark Froats and Rob Elrick – continue the long-standing tradition of fun and fellowship at the rink.

The league is open to anyone who is 30 years or older as of January 1st of the current hockey season. Everyone is welcome – there are no restrictions on skill level. All players are rated and then the Team Captains draft from the registered base of players to ensure well-balanced teams are created each season.

Our games are played twice a week at the Angus Recreation Centre and Barrie’s Allandale Rec Centre and Eastview Arenas. Our season consists of approximately 30 regular season plus 14 playoff games – that is a lot of hockey. All our games are officiated by referees and a timekeeper.  Equalization or balancing of teams happens around the 10-game mark if necessary to promote sportsmanship, fun and competitiveness within the league. The season culminates with a 1-day tournament to crown the league champions. The playoffs do heat up as everyone wants to win the “T-Shirt”.

The SCORE-HL operates predominantly under CARHA rules. All major infractions will result in suspension, which is set by the Executive Committee of the League. All suspensions may be appealed to the disciplinary committee, which consists of the Team Captains and two members of the Executive, whose decision is final.

NO FIGHTING PERMITTED!

Sponsor History

The first major sponsor of the league was Labatt’s Brewery. For fifteen years the league was known as Labatt’s Sportsmen Hockey League until Labatts decided to change their sponsorship focus, at which time Molson’s Brewery approached the league to become the new title sponsor.  Molson’s was an excellent supporter of the league for 15 years, however, after the COVID-19 pandemic, decided to shift focus to larger sponsorship opportunities. That brings us to the present, where the league has now been re-branded as the Simcoe County Over-30 Recreational Hockey League, or SCORE-HL for short.  Same fun league, new name.

We also would like to thank all of the team sponsors we’ve had over the years. Without you, there is no Simcoe County Over 30 Recreational Hockey League – thank you!
